Crime Stoppers Open Cases
for Week of December 5, 2005

Stearns County Sheriff: Theft of Sports Equipment
 
Stearns County is investigating a theft that occurred on around 1630 hours on 12-04-05 at Powder Ridge.  It happened while the victim went inside to purchase lift tickets. 

The victim said he said he was inside for about 10 minutes.  He had his snow board out side leaning against the building.  He describes it as a Lamar brand.  Bindings are Burton free style.  It was light grey w/red writing of "Lamar" on top about 2inches tall. No stickers.  Bindings were medium blue and grey in color, 149 length.

Avon Police: Felony Theft of Sculptures (From week of August 29, 2005, UPDATE)

The Avon Police are investigating the theft of sculptures from Sculpture Gallery and Crafts, 100 CO Rd 50, in Avon. The thefts occurred sometime between 8:00 PM on 08-24-2005, and 2:00 pm on 08-25-2005.

On 11-30-2005, the Avon Police Department was notified by the Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN Police Departments that they had located sculptures and lighted palm trees matching the description of the thefts which were reported on 08-25-2005 by Mark Kurtz, owner of Sculpture Gallery and Crafts.

Staff from the Avon Police Department did go to Fargo, ND where they recovered the following items mark:

Mark Kurtz did identify the sculptures as his. A suspect has been identified, and charges are pending at this time. The case is still under investigation. Five other sculptures still have not been located at this time.

The following is a scaled down item description. The Photographs are numbered according to this list.

(1) -small crawling bear cub sculpture carved in white pine. Approx. 25-30 lbs - value $450.00

(Recovered) A 71/2 foot cigar Indian carved in white pine. Approx. 300-400 lbs - value $3500.00
This sculpture was stained with a cherry stain and finished with spar varnish.
This sculpture had some blemishes on the rear of the head dress.

(3) -a 6ft bear with a bib carved in white pine. Approx. 200 lbs - value $1200.00
This bear is standing on its left foot only and is holding its right paw up.

(4) - a 5ft standing cartoon bear carved in white pine. Approx. 200 lbs - value $950.00
This bear is waving with its right paw and finished with spar varnish.

(Recovered) a 6ft tall bear wearing bibs holding a bass with both paws carved in white pine.
Approx. 300 lbs - value $1950.00 this bear also has a fishing basket and a green hornet fishing pole. The nose of this bear is slanted upward. This bear is finished with sikkens stain.
This bear also had worm holes on the back of its right shoulder which were filled with Caulking.

(Recovered) a 6ft tall skinny bear wearing blue bibs, holding a welcome sign with both paws carved in white pine. Approx. 200 lbs - value $1450.00
This bear has a smile on its face and is finished with spar varnish. This bear also is an older carving and is start to rot and look weathered.

(7) - a 6ft tall grizzly bear holding a fish with its left paw carved in white pine. Approx. 300+ lbs value $1850.00
This bear is torched and finished with spar varnish.

(8) - A 5 to 5 1/2 ft bald eagle on top of a stone with a fish in its right talon carved in white oak. Approx. 200 lbs - value $4900.00
This eagle is torched and finished with spar varnish.

(Recovered) a 5 ft tall fat bear wearing a bib carved in white pine. Approx. 200 lbs - value $1300.00
This bear has both of its paws folded in holding a welcome sign. This bear was finished with Sikkens stain. The photograph of this bear is currently unavailable.

(10)
(Recovered) a 10 ft neon lighted palm tree with yellow stems and green leaves. - value $690.00
The paint around these holes should be chipped.

(11)
(Recovered) a 12 ft neon lighted palm tree with yellow stems and green leaves. Value $750.00

The total amount of theft related to this case is $18,990.00.

 


St. Cloud Police: Phone Scam

There have been reports of a phone scam involving persons identifying themselves as employees of the federal government offering a $15,000 grant for a fee of $290. The caller tells the victims that they have to have a bank account number to transfer the money into. This is not legitimate and people are reminded never to disclose your bank account number over the phone to a person you do not know.

Stearns County Sheriff: Business Burglary

Burglary at Hayloft-St Augusta, (Luxemburg) during the night of Nov 16/17, unknown persons broke into the Hayloft Restaurant.  Entry was gained by forcing open a window.  Liquor and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen

St. Cloud Police: Residential Burglary

On 12/01/05 officers investigated a burglary that had occurred in the 900 block of Savannah Avenue.

Investigation revealed that unknown subjects entered the garage between 1900 hours on 11/11/05 and 2130 hours on 11/13/05. Approximately $2,200 dollars in tools and a compound bow were taken.
