Sherburne County Sheriff: Check
Scam
Captain Joel Brott of the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office wants to
inform the citizens of Sherburne County and the surrounding area of a
check scam that is arriving in mailboxes of our community.
The Scam asks the recipient to become a paid “secret customer” A check is
included in the mailing made out to you for thousands of dollars. The
Scammers ask that you cash the check, make some purchases at a couple of
retail stores, report on the quality of the merchandise and then to mail
back most of the check to the scammer in a money gram. Captain Brott warns
that this is a scam and that once the check is deposited into your account
and you send money back via a money gram you will lose thousands of
dollars. Captain Brott asks that everyone pay attention to their mail and
not to cash any checks that seem too good to be true. If you have received
such a mailing and want to make sure that the check is part of the scam,
you can contact the Sheriff’s Office and a deputy will verify that the
mailing is part of the scam.
The current Checks are coming from Canada and the Sheriff’ Office has
notified the Canadian authorities of the scam.
