Theft Prevention Tips for Students Arriving In St. Cloud

The St. Cloud Police Department encourages students arriving in St. Cloud to take precautions to protect their personal property. The number of students moving into apartments and residences within the same period and the various methods they use to move their possessions can provide ample opportunity for thieves.

Wallets, checkbooks and high value electronic items like computers are currently some of the most popular targets for thieves nationwide.

Here are some theft prevention tips that we would like to offer to students arriving in St. Cloud.

First and foremost, realize that you are being targeted! The move-in period is very popular-with thieves.

Maintain a record, of the make, model and especially the serial numbers of your high value electronic items and other possessions. In the event these items are stolen, providing the police with this information improves the chances of recovering the property and can increase the likelihood of the arrest and prosecution of the thief.

Do not leave your car unlocked when loading or unloading. We encourage you to use the buddy system by having someone you trust stand guard on your vehicle, trailer, or maintain sight of your property while you are in the process of moving.

Do not leave items of value in plain view inside a vehicle… or inside your room. Keep valuable items out of sight, in a closed drawer, or-in another safe place.

Lock your vehicle whenever it is out of your view… even for the briefest of periods.

Lock your windows and your room doors when you leave and take your keys with you, even if you will be away for only a minute.

Until you get to know and absolutely trust a roommate or any other person, consider them to be a potential thief.

We recommend the use of relatively inexpensive portable safes to store checkbooks, credit cards, jewelry and other small valuable items. Thieves can easily conceal a stolen checkbook in a pocket or purse. It's more difficult to carry away the safe without arousing suspicion.

Finally, remember the thieves look forward to your arrival and do not care about you as a person. It means nothing to them that you have worked hard to obtain your possessions or that you may be on a tight budget. Nor do they care if your vehicle may be rendered inoperable by the damage they may inflict during a theft from your vehicle.

Your financial loss and your time to replace your possessions or repair your vehicle is your problem, not theirs.
