Authorities Warn Of Dangerous ID Theft Suspect
UPDATED
1-10-08: -- Authorities from several
counties continue looking for a man who they believe is responsible for
crime spree throughout Central Minnesota. Latest information is that he is
suspected of breaking into and stealing at least eight vehicles. Johnson
also allegedly stole several credit cards and checks, and he's also
assumed the identity of one of his victims. Police used surveillance video
and witnesses to help identify him.
ST. CLOUD,
Minn. (WCCO) ? The Stearns County Sheriff's Office has put out a warning
about a possibly dangerous man suspected in a string of identity theft
crimes.
According to the sheriff's office, Nathan Johnson, 22, was identified by
surveillance video and witnesses to have been connected with car break-ins
and thefts in December.
Authorities believe Johnson has assumed the identities of his victims of
theft, having stolen ID from checks, credit cards and other forms of
identification from inside the vehicles.
Johnson has stolen at least seven vehicles since the beginning of
December, according to the sheriff's office. It is believed he swaps
license plates when switching between vehicles.
Johnson has been supporting himself with a victim's checks, assuming his
identity while also using his driver's license, according to the Minnesota
Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Because the suspect is considered dangerous, authorities stress for anyone
with information on Johnson's location to not approach him but instead
report that information to local law enforcement officials.
