St. Cloud Police: Scam Alert

On 2/21/08 officers were dispatched to the 900 block of 34th Avenue North for a fraud complaint. Homeowners received a letter via the mail stating that they had been selected as a secret shopper. The letter included a $3,900.00 check that they were supposed to deposit into their bank and then withdraw $3,500.00 cash keeping me $400.00 for their participation. Once this was done they were to forward it via money gram to an address they would provide once the cash had been withdrawn.

The contact person emphasized that they were not to tell anyone at their bank about this and that this was confidential.

Upon further investigation, officers have determined that other residents of St. Cloud have also experienced a similar type of scam and we are urging the public to be aware that this scam is occurring. In other cases citizens have been contacted through the internet as opposed to the mail system. The public is urged to verify through their banking institution before withdrawing any cash that the check is not fraudulent.
